Question about a Pentium 4 Desktop Computer?

I am going to a surplus place today to look at a Pentium 4 desktop computer. I have pretty much zero knowledge about computers, so all I know is that its by no means a new computer. I have the disks for vista, which I got from my laptop. What I would like to know is A) If I will be able to put Vista on this computer and have it run well. And B) What kind of video card does this computer have. I am using this one to play sims 2, so I need to make sure it will work well. Also, just any general info about how well this computer will perform speed wise is also appreaciated. Thank you so much to anyone that can help.

Answer:

A) You can not use the disks from your laptop to put vista on another computer system, such as the P4 desktop you are thinking about buying. Two problems. First, there is a 99.999% chance that you don't have a windows install disk...just a 'restore' disk. So you couldn't use that to install windows on any system. It won't work. Second, you can't transfer the OS from one computer to another, unless you are no longer using the OS on the original computer. So you'd have to literally destroy the laptop computer in order to (legally) use that OS on your desktop computer.

B) Very few pre-built systems come with a video card OF ANY KIND. Even if the used system you are looking at was originally a "gaming" system, it's likely that the video card (if there is one) was low-end by the standards of the time that the system was built. Sims 2 is not very power hungry. Still, there is a good chance that you will need to BUY a video card for the desktop computer, if you want to run SIMS 2 on it. Also, another problem is that you might need to replace the power supply in the desktop, just to be able to install a new video card.

Instead of buying used, you should consider buying a low-end NEW computer. It really shouldn't cost much extra money. Example:
Used: $100 plus $150 in upgrades to make it game ready. Total cost: $250 for an old system that likely won't last long.
New: $300-$400 for a system that will likely last at least several years (if you take care of it)

So you can see, even if you pay $100 for a used system (which would be ultra cheap), you aren't really saving money.
